Our project's impact

Imagine that you are one of a handful of survivors of an event that has virtually erased your culture. Now you must start from scratch -- locating the lost knowledge and finding ways to ensure that it continues into the future. This is the position Tibetans have been forced into by the events of the 20th century.

Many films have been made focusing on the plight of the Tibetans. The Great Transmission takes a different approach: it focuses on the knowledge tradition the Tibetans themselves value so highly, tracing its journey from ancient India to the Western world. Our focus helps communicate the Tibetans' own perception of their culture, emphasizing the way in which Tibetans regard themselves as caretakers of a tradition larger than themselves.

The work of the refugee lama Tarthang Tulku becomes another link in a transmission that extends back thousands of years -- an example of the great efforts that have been made, down the ages, to ensure that cherished knowledge survives the ravages of history.
